Position Summary:

Skilled manual work in maintaining cemetery grounds and facilities. Prepare gravesites for Interment Services and close upon completion.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

 

Receives general supervision from supervisor or other higher graded worker who issues written or verbal work assignments. The incumbent is expected to operate vehicles and equipment safely. The work is spot-checked during progress and upon completion for adequacy of progress and compliance with procedures. Skill in safely using hand tools, such as: shovel, pick, hand/power tamper and lawncare equipment such as stand- on mowers, trimmers, edgers and chain saws. Follows Chain of Custody policy for all interments. Uses deathcare software to identify, confirm and layout gravesites for interments and monument installations. Prepares grave sites for interment services by placing planks, greens, chairs, tarpaulins, tents, and lowering devices; and removing equipment following the interment services. Assists backhoe operator in excavating and closing gravesites by hauling fill dirt by using dump vehicle and acts as safety spotter during the operation. Places grave markers to specified height and alignment in accordance with section layout plan. The work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts, bending, and stooping, and squatting. Frequent arm and leg movements are required when operating lawncare equipment. The incumbent often lifts heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo, and movement of headstones. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Cemetery Experience preferred

  • Ability to operate backhoe preferred

  • Knowledge of landscape maintenance and turf installation.

  • Knowledge of tools and equipment to perform related work.

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices and principles.

  • Ability to communicate oral and written instructions to others

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Skilled in the operation and preventive maintenance of equipment and related tools.

  • Must demonstrate ability to read and write English

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduation or GED preferred

 

 

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Possession of a Florida driver’s license and be insurable by the City’s current insurance carrier.
