Job Summary

The Mental Health Counselor provides trauma-informed mental health and substance use services to individuals living with co-occurring disorders. This role supports client stability, recovery, and engagement in medical and supportive services through counseling, assessment, crisis intervention, and care coordination. The MHC works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver compassionate, culturally responsive care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group therapy using evidence-based practices

  • Conduct comprehensive mental health and substance use assessments

  • Deliver crisis intervention services to ensure client and staff safety

  • Implement individualized treatment plans under appropriate clinical supervision

  • Support clients with education, resources, and community referrals

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary treatment teams, including medical and support staff

  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation

  • Participate in required trainings, supervision, and continuing education

Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a closely related field

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of experience working with:

    • Substance use disorders

    • Co-occurring mental health conditions

    • Trauma-informed care

    • LGBTQ+ populations

    • Diverse cultural and socioeconomic communities

Licensure Requirements

  • License-eligible in California AMFT, ACSW, APCC or fully licensed LCSW, LMFT, LPCC

  • Candidates must have fewer than 1,000 supervised hours remaining to sit for licensure

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of addiction, recovery, and co-occurring disorders

  • Experience conducting diagnostic assessments and using DSM-5 and ICD coding

  • Excellent communication, organization, and teamwork skills

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical and professional standards

Technical Requirements

  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications

  • Ability to learn and effectively use electronic health record EHR and case management systems
