Job Summary
The Mental Health Counselor provides trauma-informed mental health and substance use services to individuals living with co-occurring disorders. This role supports client stability, recovery, and engagement in medical and supportive services through counseling, assessment, crisis intervention, and care coordination. The MHC works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver compassionate, culturally responsive care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide individual and group therapy using evidence-based practices
Conduct comprehensive mental health and substance use assessments
Deliver crisis intervention services to ensure client and staff safety
Implement individualized treatment plans under appropriate clinical supervision
Support clients with education, resources, and community referrals
Collaborate with multidisciplinary treatment teams, including medical and support staff
Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation
Participate in required trainings, supervision, and continuing education
Education Requirements
Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a closely related field
Experience Requirements
Minimum of two years of experience working with:
Substance use disorders
Co-occurring mental health conditions
Trauma-informed care
LGBTQ+ populations
Diverse cultural and socioeconomic communities
Licensure Requirements
License-eligible in California AMFT, ACSW, APCC or fully licensed LCSW, LMFT, LPCC
Candidates must have fewer than 1,000 supervised hours remaining to sit for licensure
Required Skills and Competencies
Strong knowledge of addiction, recovery, and co-occurring disorders
Experience conducting diagnostic assessments and using DSM-5 and ICD coding
Excellent communication, organization, and teamwork skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical and professional standards
Technical Requirements
Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications
Ability to learn and effectively use electronic health record EHR and case management systems
