Payroll Assistant (Full-Time, Onsite | Cerritos, CA)
A growing multi-state organization is seeking a detail-driven Payroll Assistant to support high-volume payroll operations at its corporate headquarters in Cerritos, CA. This full-time, non-exempt position is ideal for someone who takes pride in accuracy, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and wants to build a long-term career in payroll, HR, or accounting.
This role supports company-wide payroll processing, timesheet auditing, employee updates, reporting, and general administrative functions. Candidates must be dependable, organized, and comfortable handling confidential information.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with preparation and processing of a multi-state, bi-weekly payroll.
Enter and update employee payroll data (new hires, terminations, transfers, pay changes, tax updates).
Audit timecards for accuracy, including overtime, meal periods, PTO, and job codes.
Follow up with supervisors to resolve timecard discrepancies and missing data.
Respond professionally to employee payroll questions and requests.
Support wage verifications, garnishments, deductions, audits, and documentation requests.
Maintain accurate and confidential payroll files and records.
Assist with reconciliation tasks, reporting, and compliance reviews.
Coordinate with HR, Operations, and other departments regarding employee changes.
Produce payroll summaries and internal metrics as requested.
Maintain strict compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
Provide general administrative support to Payroll and HR leadership.
Qualifications
High school diploma required; coursework in HR, business, or accounting is a plus.
Prior payroll, HR, or accounting experience preferred (entry-level candidates with strong accuracy and admin skills will be considered).
Familiarity with payroll/timekeeping systems (ADP, Paychex, Kronos, UKG, etc.) is helpful.
Strong data entry accuracy and attention to detail.
Understanding of wage and hour rules is a plus.
Professional, reliable, and able to maintain confidentiality.
Strong communication and customer service skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and general office software.
Highly organized with the ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities.
Compensation
$20.00 – $25.00 per hour
Based on experience, skills, and alignment with the role.
Physical Requirements
Regular use of computer, keyboard, and office equipment.
Occasional standing/walking.
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs on occasion.
Ability to review detailed digital payroll data and spreadsheets.
