Shop Cleaning & Organization Technician

A large Metal Manufacturer in the Louisville area is in need of an experienced Material Handler who has an extensive background in 5S. This is a full-time temp-to-hire position on first shift. 


Position Summary

The Shop Cleaning & Organization Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organized tool and die shop. This role directly supports productivity by ensuring tools, equipment, workstations, and storage areas follow 5S and Lean standards. The technician will remove debris, clean machines, organize tools, maintain inventory of supplies, and help improve overall shop efficiency.


Key Responsibilities

1. Shop Cleaning

  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in tool room, die shop, and machining areas.
  • Clean around mills, lathes, grinders, presses, EDMs, welding areas, and benches.
  • Remove chips, metal shavings, coolant overspray, oil drips, and scrap material.
  • Empty trash bins and scrap steel containers regularly.
  • Wipe down machine surfaces and maintain cleanliness around the tool crib.

2. Tool & Equipment Organization (5S)

  • Maintain organized tool storage: cutters, inserts, holders, grinding wheels, blocks, parallels, gauges, etc.
  • Label shelves, drawers, and containers following 5S standards.
  • Return tools and fixtures to proper locations after cleaning.
  • Assist toolmakers in setting up shadow boards, foam cutouts, and standardized tool locations.
  • Eliminate clutter, trip hazards, excess inventory, and unnecessary items.

3. Material & Supply Organization

  • Keep materials and die components neatly arranged and properly labeled.
  • Organize raw steel, plates, pins, bushings, springs, and repair components.
  • Monitor and restock shop supplies such as rags, gloves, cutting fluid, coolant, safety supplies, and grinding belts.

4. Machine Area Support

  • Clean coolant sumps, screens, and chip trays as directed.
  • Assist with coolant top-offs and proper disposal following safety guidelines.
  • Maintain cleanliness around grinders, ensuring dust collectors are emptied.
  • Keep welding and bench-grinding areas clean and free from debris.

5. Safety & Compliance

  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures when cleaning machines.
  • Wear PPE at all times (steel toes, glasses, gloves, etc.).
  • Ensure walkways, exits, and fire extinguishers remain clear.
  • Report hazards, spills, and damaged equipment immediately.
  • Participate in safety meetings and follow company safety mandates.

6. Continuous Improvement

  • Support Lean & 5S implementation across the tool and die department.
  • Suggest improvements to storage layout, cleaning methods, and efficiency.
  • Participate in audits and help maintain weekly 5S scorecards.

Qualifications

  • Manufacturing or industrial cleaning experience preferred.
  • Basic understanding of tools, machines, and shop environments (training provided).
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand/walk for extended periods.
  • Good attention to detail and pride in maintaining an organized work area.
  • Must be reliable and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Work Environment

  • Industrial tool & die shop with exposure to noise, metal chips, oil, heat, and machinery.
  • PPE required.
  • Work may include cleaning under machines, moving material, organizing shelves, and operating carts, pallet jacks, or shop vacs.

Performance Measures

  • Cleanliness of shop areas (5S score).
  • Reduction of clutter and improved tool organization.
  • Timeliness and consistency of cleaning routines.
  • Positive feedback from toolmakers and shop supervisors.
