Overview
Long’s Human Resource Services is recruiting a Design & Engineering Manager for a leading automotive accessories manufacturer in Theodore, AL. This key leadership role reports directly to the Director of Design & Engineering and oversees a growing team of designers, engineers, and technical staff.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in cut-and-sew manufacturing, automotive design, and ISO 9001 environments, along with hands-on CAD/graphics experience and a passion for developing innovative, high-quality products from concept to launch.
Key Responsibilities

Manage all activities within the Design & Engineering Department, including personnel oversight, scheduling, and performance management.

Lead product design and development for automotive accessories, ensuring compliance with customer specifications and quality standards.

Interface directly with customers for design approvals, engineering feasibility, and product validation.

Oversee the full product lifecycle—from concept and rendering through 2D/3D design, prototyping, validation, and production launch.

Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to design and engineering staff.

Manage the Engineering Change Process, including internal documentation and customer approvals.

Oversee the creation and maintenance of design documentation (BOMs, FPS, RMS, CPS, ECR/ECN, MPR Matrix, etc.).

Coordinate packaging and labeling development to meet customer and logistics requirements.

Evaluate customer trial samples and support PPAP, ISIR, and APQP documentation submissions.

Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, quality, and production to ensure on-time project completion.

Manage departmental resources — staffing, equipment, and software — to support multiple concurrent development projects.

Support sales and marketing through renderings, sample development, and technical input for new product initiatives.
Requirements
Education:
-
Bachelor’s Degree required (Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field preferred).
Experience:
-
Proven “cut-and-sew” manufacturing background.

Experience operating within an ISO 9001 Quality Management System.

8+ years of design/engineering experience, including team leadership.

Automotive industry experience strongly preferred, particularly with OEM or Tier 1 suppliers.

Familiarity with APQP and PPAP processes.
Technical Skills:

Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD LT, and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator).

Strong command of Microsoft Office tools.

Excellent verbal/written communication and analytical skills.

Physical Requirements:
