Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to lead and manage all aspects of construction operations within the Highway Department. This role is responsible for supervising up to 60 employees, overseeing daily operations, ensuring compliance with safety standards, coordinating with other departments, and maintaining project timelines and quality. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a proven ability to manage large teams, and prior public works or construction supervisory experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise all craft and highway workers within the department.
- Plan and schedule work assignments; determine manpower levels, material needs, and equipment requirements.
- Monitor work performance to ensure compliance with parish rules, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Complete and submit timesheets accurately for payroll processing.
- Communicate regularly with the Public Works Director regarding potential issues, project delays, or scheduling challenges; assist in resolving such matters.
- Maintain coordination with other parish departments such as Purchasing, Payroll, and Permitting.
- Size culvert permits as needed.
- Oversee employee training, job performance evaluations, and implementation of disciplinary actions when necessary.
- Foster a safe and productive work environment.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervise up to 60 employees in the Highway Department.
Assign, direct, and evaluate work performance.
Conduct performance reviews, provide coaching, and implement improvement plans.
Handle employee complaints and resolve workplace issues in accordance with parish policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of 3 years of public works or construction experience in a supervisory role.
Strong leadership and organizational skills.
Knowledge of construction processes, materials, and safety procedures.
Ability to read and interpret plans, schedules, and project documents.
Effective communication and problem-solving abilities.
Work Environment:
Primarily outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
May involve exposure to loud noise, heavy equipment, and hazardous conditions.
Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and bending required.
