Job Title: Senior Accountant

Job Summary: The Senior Accountant will assist the Controller in all aspects of posting, reviewing, and reconciling general ledger activity for the department. This includes preparing financial statements and external reports for the College. The role also involves managing the College’s Capital Budget program, ensuring compliance with fixed asset policies, entering data into the fixed asset accounting system, and reconciling property, plant, and equipment (PPE) accounts. The Senior Accountant will support various financial functions, perform month-end and year-end processes, and provide backup support for accounts payable duties. The position also includes preparing financial reports, assisting with audits, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Controller in posting, reviewing, and reconciling general ledger activity for the department.

  • Prepare financial statements and other external reports for the College.

  • Serve as the budget manager for the College’s Capital Budget program.

  • Interpret policy in coordination with the Controller to ensure expenses meet fixed asset guidelines/requirements.

  • Enter data into the fixed asset accounting system and reconcile PPE and related depreciation/amortization accounts.

  • Act as the backup to the Accounts Payable Clerk as needed.

  • Perform monthly and annual investment accounting and reporting for endowment funds.

  • Conduct monthly and quarterly account reconciliations and make related journal entries.

  • Assist in the preparation of internal financial statements for monthly and quarterly financial reporting.

  • Prepare supporting schedules and footnotes for the annual external audit.

  • Ensure compliance with College, local, state, and federal requirements, as well as standard accounting and auditing procedures.

  • Analyze and interpret financial data to prepare regular and ad hoc financial reports.

  • Assist in preparing cash transfers and draws.

  • Assist with the preparation of IRS Form 990 annual returns.

  • Provide support during peak student registration periods by assisting at the counter.

  • Document processes to assist in risk and control identification, including interviewing staff and reviewing policies and procedures.

  • Perform general ledger system maintenance and controls (SCT Banner).

  • Oversee the records retention and destruction processes for the Business Office.

  • Provide support to the Development Division as necessary.

  • Take on special projects and other duties as assigned by the Controller.

Qualifications:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field with at least five years of relevant accounting experience.

  • Preferred: Advanced degree (Accounting and/or CPA certification or the ability to sit for the exam) with three years of experience.

  • Experience in a Public Accounting Firm is highly desirable.

  • Previous experience in higher education or a non-profit setting is preferred.

  • Familiarity with SunGard Banner Financial software is a plus.

Work Environment:

  • Full-time position based on-campus.

  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required during peak periods (e.g., year-end and audit season).
