The Shredder Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating industrial shredders and related processing equipment to reduce and prepare various materials (e.g., scrap metal, plastics) for recycling or further processing. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to safety protocols, and the ability to perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs as needed.

Responsibilities:

• Operate shredder equipment, conveyors, and ancillary machinery according to established procedures and safety guidelines.

• Monitor material flow into and out of the shredder, ensuring proper feed rates and consistent operation.

• Perform pre-operation inspections, checking fluid levels, belts, and other key components to ensure machinery is in good working condition.

• Identify and remove unshreddable or hazardous materials prior to feeding to prevent equipment damage.

• Conduct minor equipment maintenance, troubleshoot malfunctions, and report major repairs needed to maintenance teams.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring compliance with housekeeping and environmental standards.

• Complete daily production and maintenance logs accurately.

• Communicate effectively with team members, yard supervisors, and maintenance personnel to maximize shredder uptime and efficiency.

• Assist in training new operators and laborers on safe shredder operations and material handling procedures.

• Adhere to all company policies regarding health, safety, and environmental standards.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

• 1+ years of heavy equipment operation experience; shredder operation experience highly preferred.

• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

• Ability to read and follow work instructions, manuals, and safety guidelines.

• Comfortable working in an outdoor, industrial environment exposed to noise, dust, and weather conditions.

• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods.

• Basic understanding of production goals and equipment performance metrics.

• Commitment to working safely and following safety procedures at all times.

Work Environment:

• Outdoor industrial yard or processing facility.

• Exposure to loud noise, dust, vibrations, and changing weather conditions.

• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe boots, and safety glasses required.

• Shift work and occasional overtime may be required, including weekends.
