Job Summary:    The Distribution Engineering Designer III (DED III) position is the third level of the DED career track where progression is based on time in grade and performance.   This career track is tasked with developing designs for electrical distribution systems including but not limited to:  Overhead and underground circuits for joint use, lighting, and commercial, industrial and residential development. This track is responsible for using technical skills and incorporating accurate field data collection to complete design work.  This role will assist with storm restoration when requested, especially as a damage assessor.  The DED III role involves using design specifications and design aid tools to produce instruments of design on projects.  The DED III will be expected to direct site meetings with clients/customers and construction crews to progress their projects.


This position primarily involves working in an office environment.  There is an expectation of significant field work, which may include exposure to inclement weather conditions such as extreme heat/cold, high humidity, rain, snow and icy conditions.  Field exposure to insects, animals and vegetation may pose a threat.


Key Technical Skills Required:


Your key responsibilities include:

·Producing computer-aided electric distribution design drawings and Bill Of Material (BOM) necessary for the construction of complex projects without ongoing oversight.

·Performing field data collection using standard tools, methods and processes and performing necessary project-specific inspections accurately and efficiently.  

·Becoming familiar with defined technical skills which can include cable pulling calculations, cable voltage drop calculations, transformer loading calculations, and pole loading analysis calculations. 

·Gaining understanding of client construction standards, construction and workflow processes, and customer charging guidelines, as required. 

·Generating permitting and other project-supporting documentation as needed.  

·Exhibiting ability to communicate with clients and lead site meetings with minimal oversight. 

·Demonstrating ability to pursue work from the Client.  

·Understanding the hazards and dangers of the distribution system and how to navigate their role to prevent dangerous situations and mitigating hazards during the office and field portion of their role. 

·Actively looking out for others’ safety in all aspects of this work. 

·Attending and engaging in scheduled safety meetings and adhering to driving and site hazard identification, mitigation and reporting training.

·Incumbents will have the ability to work on a storm response local or travel team as an Assessor or Team Lead, as needed.                         


This role will work under minimal supervision for mentorship, guidance and training. 

Education and/or Work Experience Required:  Four-year ABET-accredited Engineering degree and four years of relevant experience with a minimum of two of those years in distribution design.  Passing the Fundamentals Exam (FE) can count as six months of relevant experience.  An active PE license can replace two years of relevant work experience.

Work Environment:

The work environment for this position involves a mix of office-based tasks and fieldwork. This position will support engineering projects by collecting desktop and field data to perform planning, design, and project management tasks. This position may also require visits to construction or project sites to collect measurements, take photos, talk with stakeholders, and observe project conditions, and learn about field operations.

  • Noise Level: The office environment is typically quiet to moderate but include adjacent, occupied work spaces, while field visits may expose the intern to moderate to loud noise levels, especially in active construction areas.

Work Sites: During site visits, the employee may be exposed to various outdoor conditions, including weather, uneven terrain, utility components, tools and measurement devices and active construction environments. KCI will provide necessary safety equipment (PPE), such as hard hats, safety vests, gloves, and ear protection, which must be worn as required. Employees are responsible for supplying their own protective footwear and appropriate attire for the assigned tasks.

  • Mobility: The employee will spend a good portion of their time seated in an office environment working on a computer. However, they will be required to stand, walk, and move across construction sites, outdoor public areas, utility equipment areas or other project areas during site visits.
  • Manual Dexterity: Frequent use of hands and fingers is necessary for drafting, writing reports, and using computers. The employee may also handle physical documents and work with small tools during field tasks including a measuring stick that extended to 35’ touching utility systems.
  • Lifting Requirements: Minimal lifting is required, but occasionally the employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 35 lbs.

Visual and Auditory Requirements: The employee must be able to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints, and technical documents. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for interactions with team members and on-site personnel.
