Overview:
Flexicrew Technical Services (FTS) is seeking a Chief Engineer – Cutter Suction Dredge for a full-time, 100% travel role with a rotation schedule of 3 weeks on/3 weeks off. This position can be based anywhere in the U.S., preferably along the Gulf or East Coast. Lodging, transportation, and daily meal allowance are provided during travel assignments.
Essential Duties:
• Maintain overall responsibility for propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery aboard an assigned Cutter Suction Dredge.
• Act as a vessel officer and partner with the Captain for the safe and reliable operation of all onboard machinery.
• Supervise engine room crew and oversee contracted repair services onboard the vessel.
• Collaborate with shoreside Maintenance Superintendents and Managers to ensure compliance with preventative maintenance systems.
• Ensure vessel meets all ABS and USCG regulatory requirements.
• Stay current on and implement company policies, ISM code, and Maintenance Operating System (MOS) procedures.
• Lead daily Pre-Shift Meetings and Safety Walkthroughs, and promote proactive safety practices including near misses and good catches.
• Promote clean and safe work environments, thorough job safety analyses (JSAs), and ensure proper PPE usage.
• Conduct and participate in effective emergency drills in partnership with the Captain.
• Maintain daily Engine Room Logs, Oil Record Books, Lock-Out Tag-Out Logs, and fluid monitoring.
• Maintain and execute vessel condition monitoring and preventative maintenance tasks.
• Manage inventory of vessel critical spare parts within designated thresholds.
• Assist with maintenance planning for shipyard events and participate in weekly Reliability Assured Maintenance (RAM) meetings.
Requirements/Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering or technical discipline – OR – equivalent industry experience.
• Valid Driver’s License & TWIC Card (or eligibility to obtain).
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines and propulsion systems, including operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Proficient in pneumatic, hydraulic, compressed air, fuel oil, and lube oil systems.
• Solid understanding of basic electrical machinery, automation, and troubleshooting.
• Strong communication and leadership skills; capable of motivating teams and maintaining high morale.
• Must be a self-starter and proactively monitor operations.
• Dredging experience is required.
• Must be able to travel 100% Nationwide with 3 weeks on/3 weeks off rotation.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Valid USCG Chief Engineer License
• Valid Tankerman PIC Certificate
• Training in EMD & Caterpillar engines
• Formal hydraulic and electrical systems training
• Rigging and overhead lifting certification
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to work in a maritime environment, including confined spaces and varying weather conditions.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods.
• Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screening.
