Controls Engineer

Overview:

Baton Rouge, LA: Flexicrew Technical Services (FTS) is seeking a Controls/Systems Engineer for our innovative and growing client. This opportunity comes with great benefits and a competitive salary.

The Controls/Systems Engineer will report to the Controls/Systems Engineering Manager. This position primarily involves design of industrial and municipal control systems. The employee will need to create and interpret engineering sketches and have a basic understand of AutoCAD, electrical control and ladder logic.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Engineering of control systems, including hardware and software design.

  • Directing drafting personnel to prepare final electrical drawings from engineering sketches using AutoCAD software, or directly preparing these drawings in AutoCAD.

  • Reviewing designs with technical personnel.

  • Coordinating with shop personnel regarding the assembly and wiring of control and panels and drive systems from electrical connection and panel layout drawings.

  • Perform fundamental electrical checkout of control panels and drive system wiring, or write test specifications so that this may be accomplished by shop personnel.

  • Perform and/or assist other engineering personnel in quality control testing of systems prior to shipment.

  • Perform and/or participate with other engineering personnel in final acceptance testing of systems witnessed by client prior to shipment.

  • Coordinating with and assisting clients during systems installation and startup.

 

Requirements/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering

  • Thorough knowledge of Windows IBM-PC compatible operation

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and capability to direct its efficient use

  • Experience with the use of Microsoft Excel and Word

  • Develop a working knowledge of Google Apps and Pipedrive (email, contact and document management,) Deltek ERP project management, time and material billing systems for use of office systems

  • A thorough knowledge of Windows client and server operating systems and TCP/IP networking concepts

  • Thorough knowledge of industrial communications technologies, including the major wired and wireless communications standards, with the ability to design systems incorporating these technologies

  • Thorough knowledge of programmable logic controllers, including a thorough knowledge of at least one of the major vendors programming systems (Allen Bradley RSLogix, Schneider Concept or Proworx NxT/Unity, Siemens Step7)

  • A thorough knowledge of industrial human machine interface software, including a thorough knowledge of at least one of the major software packages (Wonderware, Intellution, Rockwell FactoryTalk)

  • Thorough knowledge of distributed control systems including a thorough knowledge of at least one of the major DCS vendors (Honeywell, Delta V, ABB, Rockwell PlantPAX, Foxburo)

  • Must have the ability to design and program systems using all the above mentioned technology

  • Ability to learn additional software packages as required by the projects

  • A thorough knowledge of industrial instrumentation, including ISA standards

  • Thorough knowledge of electrical wiring fundamentals

  • A thorough knowledge of ladder logic schematics, including the ability to read schematic

  • Thorough knowledge of variable frequency drive systems, their application and an ability to design built-up drive assemblies from major manufacturers drive power units

 

Project Duties:

  • Plan projects using Deltek, Google Apps and Pipedrive based systems. Enter relevant data regarding tasks, set time budgets for other team members in project plans, in accordance with job estimates.

  • Document billing hours and report as scheduled.

  • Plan work according to the approved budget.

  • Complete work within or below budgetary limit. If over budget, it must be justified.

  • Participate in information dissemination and decision making meetings and make contributions in eliminating bottlenecks and costs overruns.

  • On continuous basis study and evaluate processes and make suggestions for improvement.

  • Plan to complete work prior to deadline at each phase.

  • Prepare design and documentation.

  • Create cabinet layout.

  • Create Bill of Material.

  • Make sure the parts and material are most cost effective in terms of price and hours spent for installation, modifications, and corrections.

  • Prepare electrical wiring diagram and other required control system sketches and drawings.

  • Double check drawings, electrical diagrams, Bill of Material, and clear assembly details.

  • Prepare Bill of Material for all items including high dollar and long lead-time items for purchasing Department.

  • Check the product and obtain approval for modifications.

  • Perform quality and performance tests.

  • Verify in-house product testing and document drawing modifications.

 

Physical Requirements:

The work is primarily performed in the shop and yard areas which are subject to extremes of temperature, humidity. There will be moving machinery and some work must be completed in high or hazardous places. There is exposure to fumes, airborne particles and vibration. There is a risk of electrical shock or explosion if work is done improperly. The employee will also be required to travel to customer’s locations in all types of weather conditions and the conditions at the customer’s premises are not in the control of the organization.

  • Eyesight: Functional, correctable to 20/20, with accurate depth perception.

  • Hearing: Functional, correctable to normal to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction; Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discriminations in sound.

  • Speech: Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Must be able to speak, read, and write English.

  • Mobility: Must have full use of the body and senses to be able to service, repair, build and operate equipment. Must be able to lift in excess of 40 pounds.

  • HOURS OF WORK

  • Standard Hours: 0800-1700 Monday through Friday, travel may be required.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean insurable driving record.
