Control Systems Engineer

Overview:

Baton Rouge, LA/New Orleans, LA/Lafayette, LA/Lake Charles, LA/ or Mobile, AL: Flexicrew Technical Services (FTS) is seeking a Control Systems Engineer to become an integral part of our client's expanding Technical Risk Team. In this capacity, you will serve as the foremost authority on Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and act as the primary resource for providing expert guidance throughout the consulting, design, execution, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance phases of these critical systems. As the designated expert, the Controls Engineer will actively contribute to both capital projects and the support of ongoing operation, maintenance, modifications, testing, and troubleshooting of both new and existing platforms.

The role necessitates the individual to spearhead the consulting, design, development, implementation, testing, and initiation of Safety Instrumented System projects. Proficiency in SIS process safety principles, strong programming skills, and an unwavering commitment to meticulous organization are essential for this role. Technical expertise, critical analysis abilities, and an unwavering attention to detail are all paramount to success.

This position may require occasional visits to customer industrial sites. Individuals must demonstrate the capability to adhere rigorously to safety regulations and guidelines in these environments. Maintaining a constant focus on detail and an acute awareness of potential safety risks is a fundamental expectation. Mature judgment and a strong sense of responsibility are indispensable attributes for thriving in this demanding environment.

 

Essential Duties:

  • This role demands a high level of expertise, dedication, and all other relevant job qualifications. Expect regular urgency and pressure to deliver accurate results swiftly, often handling multiple tasks with frequent interruptions. It requires unwavering responsiveness and the ability to work extended hours across a broad scope without compromising pace. While training in specific equipment may be provided, the successful candidate should be proactive in self-learning as needed.

  • Consistent and predictable attendance is a fundamental requirement for this position.

  • Provision of technical support services for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) to our customer base.

  • Typical SIS project responsibilities encompass:

    • Developing safety requirement specifications (SRS) and Cause and Effect matrices, as well as performing SIL verification.

    • Creating or reviewing functional check and proof test procedures for SIS.

    • Offering guidance on SIS cybersecurity.

    • Collaborating with production and process departments to gather essential data for optimal safety instrumented function (SIF) design.

    • Identifying and establishing key SIS training activities and processes to be implemented and practiced during the various Safety Lifecycle phases associated with SIS.

    • Tasks include SIS programming, logic testing, simulation, customer FAT testing, onsite customer SAT testing, and providing process startup support.

  • Some Travel and overnight stays will be required, with duration varying based on assigned tasks. Typical travel ranges from 2-3 nights within 1-4 hours from the home office, travel fluctuates based on specific service requirements.

  • Willingness to travel via boat or helicopter to offshore facilities when necessary.

  • Facilitate customer application requirements and support sales personnel and product principals as needed.

  • Build and nurture strong business relationships consistently.

  • Attend mandatory skills and safety training through computer-based courses and local or out-of-state factory training programs.

  • Adhere to safety regulations, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and comply with safety requirements at all locations, remaining vigilant and aware of surroundings at all times.

  • Provide support to colleagues, especially during high workload situations.

  • Follow the organizations policies, procedures, and methodologies while upholding TCC (Total Customer Commitment) standards.

Requirements/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering

  • TUV Rheinland certificate or CFSP/CFSE certification (preferred)

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in Process Safety related to the following core deliverables: SIL Verification Calculations, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Safety Requirements Specifications, SIF Proof Test Procedures, and Factory/Site Acceptance Test Procedures.

  • Experience of implementing SIS projects based on ISA 61511/ ISA 84

  • Knowledge and experience of performing SIL verification

  • In depth knowledge of Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA)

  • Working knowledge of process safety standards

  • Effective written/verbal communication and organization/analytical skills.

  • Recording/writing detailed technical data and reports.

  • Programming experience with Triconex and/or DeltaV SIS (preferred)

  • Communication and leadership skills with cross-functional teams (preferred)

  • Ability to manage ambiguity, communicate and lead effectively in cross-functional teams (preferred)
