Are you an experienced mechanical engineer with a passion for designing custom industrial machinery? We're hiring a Custom Machinery Design Engineer to join a high-performing team at a rapidly growing engineering firm located in Downers Grove, IL. This is a direct-hire opportunity where you’ll play a key role in the design, development, and implementation of complex equipment solutions across a wide range of industries.
What You'll Do:
• Lead the design and release of custom-engineered machinery and equipment
• Apply advanced mechanical engineering principles to solve unique challenges
• Create, update, and manage mechanical drawings, BOMs, and documentation
• Analyze existing systems and propose creative, cost-effective improvements
• Mentor junior engineers and designers to uphold high design standards
• Conduct field inspections and supervise installations, both domestic and international
• Collaborate in cross-functional brainstorming and design reviews
• Provide hands-on troubleshooting support to assembly and commissioning teams
• Assist in standardizing drafting and engineering procedures
• Manage Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and related documentation
What You Bring:
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (degree preferred, not required)
• 2-8 years of proven experience designing custom industrial equipment or automation machinery
• Deep understanding of fabrication processes including machining and welding
• Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD systems – Inventor preferred
• Familiarity with GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and basic FEA concepts
• Hands-on fabrication or machining background a strong plus
• Field experience, installation supervision, or customer site audits a plus
• Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Up to 15% travel availability (including some international travel and weekends)
