Summary/Objective:
Mechanical Design Engineer – III uses knowledge of custom automation and precision machining alongside a team of sales professionals, managers, controls engineers and builders to develop an accurate design for automation systems. These machines are uniquely designed assembly, inspection, and test systems for industries that demand precision assembly for their components. Some of the industries we serve include automotive, aerospace, defense, medical equipment, pharmaceutical, and industrial component manufacturers.
Job Duties:
The primary responsibility for this position will be leading and directing automation projects in the mechanical design department. This will require management of technical details of a project, project design, schedules, and customer interface. This job may require some overnight travel. Projects range in size from $250,000 to 5 million dollars.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Perform engineering calculations with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
• Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness etc. in the development of equipment, processes, and products.
• Examine feasibility of using one or more machines to carry out sequential operations.
• Produce working drawings, detail drawings and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies
or product using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
• Analyze designs and systems for compliance to applicable standards (i.e. OSHA, CE or customer
specific).
• Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes,
hardness, etc.
• Coordinate in-house and contract engineering staff on projects in a team setting.
• Liaise with vendors for technical information and specifications.
• Communicate all requested design changes to the Director of Engineering or Lead Engineer.
• Responsible for communicating progress on tasks to management.
• Finalize and update drawing documentation.
• Create drawings of existing tooling through the use of precision measuring devices such as
Vernier scale and micrometers.
• Collaborate with Fabricators, Machinists, Toolmakers and Electricians in the completion of equipment and resolving problems.
• May periodically assist in preparing customer documentation.
• Adhere to all ISO procedures pertaining to the job responsibilities.
Required Computer Skills:
• Windows operating systems; Solidworks; AutoCAD; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Word; Microsoft Project
Required Education and Experience:
• An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology - desired, but not required.
• 5-7 years’ experience in mechanical engineering related to custom automation.
• 3-5 years’ of working experience utilizing Solidworks 3D CAD software required.
• Demonstration of ongoing training or coursework in Solidworks 3D software desired.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no supervisory duties. However, mentorship of our less experienced engineers in the department will be a key role for this position. Mentorship is accomplished through regular interaction with the design team, coaching mentees on best practices, and coordinating the over-all project design group to meet company objectives and deliverables.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Work hours are expected to be 48 hours per week or more, depending on business needs. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
