About the Role

We are seeking a UL508A Control Panel Designer with strong AutoCAD expertise to join our automation engineering team in Chicago’s western suburbs.


This position is for an experienced electrical designer (3–8 years) who can independently create 480VAC/3-phase industrial control schematics, panel layouts, and BOMs for manufacturing automation systems.

You must have in-depth knowledge of NEC industrial standards, Allen-Bradley hardware (IO, VFDs, servo drives), and be able to ensure full compliance with UL508A and SCCR requirements from design through fabrication.


Note: If your background is primarily in residential, commercial, or generic electrical design, this role will not be a fit.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop 480VAC/3-phase industrial electrical control schematics, panel layouts, and Bills of Materials (BOM) in AutoCAD, ensuring compliance with NEC and UL508A standards.
  • Apply Allen-Bradley hardware expertise (IO, VFDs, servo drives) to create accurate, standards-compliant designs.
  • Ensure SCCR compliance, proper branch circuit segregation, transformer load sizing, and power supply selection.
  • Collaborate with project engineers, controls engineers, and panel fabricators to resolve design and build questions.
  • Perform design audits to confirm adherence to UL508A specifications and manufacturer spacing requirements.
  • Edit and finalize drawing sets from markups, following company template library standards.
  • Manage job documentation and releases in the ERP system, tracking budgets and timelines.
  • Support field site audits and retrofit design verifications when required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate technical degree or equivalent certification.
  • 3–8 years of industrial electrical schematic and panel design experience.
  • Proven experience designing 480VAC/3-phase systems with IO systems, motor starters, VFDs, and servo drives.
  • AutoCAD proficiency and strong MS Excel skills.
  • Knowledge of Allen-Bradley product catalog.
  • Current UL508A certification.
  • Thorough understanding of NEC industrial requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred

  • Experience with 690VDC common bus drive systems.
  • Field site audit and install supervision experience.
  • Hands-on background in panel layout and wiring.
