This class segregates municipal solid waste, special waste or household hazardous waste and recyclables; logs activities, operates light to heavy equipment and assists customers with proper disposal.

This is a "mandatory testing" Position that requires Drug Testing.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Examines, recognizes, and screens municipal, special, and household hazardous waste entering the facility in accordance with applicable rules, guidelines, and procedures. Operates waste handling and transfer equipment. Directs customers as to the proper disposal of scrap metal, appliances, tires, florescent tubes, used oil, batteries, mercury containing devices, electronics waste, and other types of solid waste approved for disposal at designated facilities. Explains routine waste disposal polices and procedures to customers. Prepares and maintains logs and records of work activity, equipment utilization, performance standards, and/or other related items. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

Training and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and up to six months of experience working at a waste handling/recycling facility, some experience with equipment operation, and some customer service experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licensing Requirements: Valid Driver's License or Commercial Driver's License if needed for the type of equipment operated.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAOs):

Landfill waste handling and transfer equipment;· Customer service principles;· Sources, characteristics, and methods of identifying of prohibited waste;· Occupational hazards and safe work methods. Providing customer service;· Operating and maintaining landfill maintenance and waste handling equipment;· Recognizing and identifying prohibited waste items;· Preparing and maintaining a variety of records and logs;· Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Emergency Management Responsibilities: Note: During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Positions in this class typically require: balancing, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and intense noises.
