Medical Assistant Responsibilities:

 

  • Escorts patients to and from exam rooms, provider offices, and treatment room as appropriate.

  • Records patient data prior to each provider visit, including but not limited to, vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medical changes.

  • Obtains all necessary patient records as required by physician and verifies presence of consent prior to treatment or procedures.

  • Prepares and stocks exam/treatment rooms and orders supplies as needed.

  • Assist with delegated patient education activities including but not limited to distributing education literature, etc.

  • Preforms EKG’s as ordered by provider.

  • Administers subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, including but not limited to, hormones and biological growth factors.

  • Maintain all exam room disinfection protocols.

  • Processes instruments and equipment as needed.

  • Follows expected guidelines for maintenance of daily clinic chart triage.

  • Answers patient telephone calls for referral to physician or nurse/pharmacist.

  • Phone in prescriptions and makes other patient calls as directed by physicians and RN.

  • Schedules patient tests, procedures and hospital admissions and schedules appointments to follow-up on test results, as applicable.

  • Arranges for pre-authorizations and pre-certifications as needed. Informs physician of patient reschedules and no shows.

  • Obtains new patient records and previous test results, x-rays, scans, etc.

  • Performs other administrative duties, i.e. typing, filing, faxing, reception, etc, as requested by supervisor, RN or physician.

  • Display excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Maintains efficient and appropriate patient flow in and out of exam rooms.

  • Reports changes in patient condition, including but not limited to abnormal labs, x-rays, scans, drug reactions and initiates appropriate action.

  • Demonstrates awareness of community resources available to patients and assists with referrals if necessary. Manages patient medication refill requests from the pharmacy and records the information in the patient chart after obtaining provider approval.

  • Maintains a clean work environment and exam rooms, restocks the supply area as needed. Provides nursing support coverage for the satellite offices as needed.

  • Follows OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, bio hazardous waste and any other material potentially infected with a blood borne pathogen.

  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains a professional affiliations if applicable.

  • Maintains patient confidentiality.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Entry level position requiring 0-1 year of experience as a medical or nursing assistant in a hospital or clinic setting Current CPR certification required.

Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants preferred.

Proof of current Medical Assistant Certification as required by CMA attestation (must be completed within 90 days of hire if not current).

Once MA Certification is obtained it must be kept active/current for employment at OCSRI.

 

KEY COMPETENCIES

Demonstrates prioritization of care.

Competency in performance of clinical tasks/procedures, such as injections, EKGs. Teamwork and both internal/external customer service.

Flexibility and adaptability. Communication – both written and verbal.

Management linens/hazardous waste in treatment room/clinic.

Demonstrates thoroughness, consistency of documentation as pertinent to EMR.

Maintain current knowledge on new information relevant to infusion/clinic medical assistant role, and on policies/procedures as applicable.

Participating in meaningful use data collection then entering information into the electronic medical record.
