Job description:
Job Overview:
Operates a variety of machining equipment, including conventional, specialized, and CNC machines, to produce precision parts from both metallic and non-metallic materials. Ensures consistent productivity while adhering to strict quality standards and specifications.
Job Duties:
1. Operate Assigned Machinery to Fabricate Parts
- Review work orders and specification sheets prior to machine operation.
2. Ensure Parts Meet Required Specifications
- Maintain and continuously improve the quality of produced parts.
- Interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, and setup requirements.
- Verify finished workpieces conform to specifications.
- Follow all work instructions and comply with ISO and Schafer procedures.
- Complete Schafer’s quality certification requirements for the assigned area.
3. Maintain Operational Effectiveness of Equipment
- Perform all assigned preventative maintenance tasks.
- Monitor machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions; adjust controls as needed.
- Collaborate with engineers, production personnel, and programmers to resolve machining issues.
4. Support Business Processes
- Continuously improve productivity of assigned machines.
- Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials or workpieces.
- Optimize tool life and explore new tooling options to reduce costs.
- Minimize machine setup downtime.
- Prepare computer setups by organizing tooling, fixtures, steel, gauges, and other materials in Kanban locations.
- Maintain compliance with the 6S program in assigned areas.
5. Contribute to Overall Company Effectiveness
- Escalate problems or complaints to the appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Adhere to all Schafer policies and procedures.
- Notify Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.
- Provide input and assistance for quality improvement initiatives.
- Resolve operational issues promptly.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Assist in evaluating job applicants’ technical knowledge for the cell.
- Document vital information in the logbook for subsequent shifts.
- Train new personnel on machine operations.
- Provide support and cross-training in other lathe areas as needed.
- Power machines on and off according to proper procedures.
- Load and unload parts safely and efficiently.
- Ensure correct tooling is installed for each machine.
- Create and size jaws on the machine as required.
- Change chucking devices when necessary.
- Identify insert and tool geometry for optimal performance.
- Make offset adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Up to Two (2) years of relevant experience preferred
- Able to identify that product meets quality standards
- Ability to use a computer for basic tasks and documentation.
- Ability to read and follow documented procedures and standards
- Willing and available to work overtime to reach goals
- Clear communication (oral and written) skills
