Position Summary:

This is highly technical inspection work involving the enforcement of codes, regulations, and ordinances regarding building construction work for residential and commercial projects. The incumbent in this position confers with and advises building contractors, engineers, architects, and others regarding building code compliance. Work is reviewed through oral and written reports, discussion, and results obtained.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures conformance with approved plans and state/municipal codes, regulations, and ordinances.

  • Performs required inspections of foundations, concrete slabs, beams, pilasters, steel placement, framing, insulation, roofing, and related construction work.

  • Reads and interprets plans and specifications to facilitate proper construction methods, etc.; examines construction documents to determine conformity with applicable building and related regulations; contacts developers to obtain required documentation.

  • Inspect buildings or building designs to determine compliance with building and/or fire prevention.

  • Verifies compliance with approved materials and methods.

  • Maintains records of inspections and violations.

  • Meets with contractors, engineers, architects, and others regarding construction issues.

  • Research information in the municipal archives upon request of public officials and private citizens.

  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of building trade procedures, materials, and practices.

  • Knowledge of all aspects of construction methods and materials.

  • Ability to gain knowledge of the building codes in operation in the City.

  • Ability to gain knowledge of ordinances relating to construction and inspections.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from construction plans, blueprints, and ordinances.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, and the general public.

 

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate’s degree in construction, engineering, architecture, or related field preferred.

  • Five (5) years of experience in trades as a building inspector, builder, engineer, architect, superintendent, foreman, or competent mechanic in charge of construction.

  • A combination of education, training, and experience may be substituted at the City Manager’s discretion.

 

Certificates & Licenses:

  • Immediately upon employment, the selected candidate shall have ninety (90) calendar days to obtain provisional certification from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board.  Failure to obtain a provisional certification within ninety (90) days may be cause for termination.

  • Within one year of employment, the selected candidate shall convert the provisional certificate to a Standard Class certificate.

  • Failure to acquire and maintain a standard certification/license may be cause for termination.

  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required according to the job duties and responsibilities within one (1) year of employment. FEMA IS-00100 / FEMA IS-00200 / FEMA IS-00700.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and must be insurable by the City’s current insurance carrier.
