Position Summary:

Highly skilled work in maintaining, repairing and construction work of City buildings and facilities. Will be assigned to a variety of functions within the classification depending upon the needs of the department, including on-call duty. Under general supervision, incumbent must exercise reasonable initiates and independent judgement in ensuring that timely, efficient, and effective services are provided to departments, selecting work methods, and performing assigned tasks. Work is reviewed through oral and written reports, discussion, and results obtained.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.

  • Performs highly skilled work for jobs related to construction, maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities.

  • Performs highly skilled work in various trade specialties i.e., concrete, carpentry, finished carpentry, cabinetry, plumbing, roofing, painting and electrical work, metal fabrication, welding, air conditioning, refrigeration and laboring tasks related to construction and remodel work.

  • Operates various hand tools, power saws, planers, bench grinders, sanders, cement mixers, paint sprayers, pressure cleaning equipment, welding equipment, chain saws, trimmers, small trucks, tractors, trenchers, automotive and light construction equipment.

  • Performs highly skilled work in lock-smithing.

  • Functions as crew leader on occasion as needed.

  • Takes on call duty as needed.

  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, materials and tools of several trades.

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades. 

  • Demonstrated competence in the primary elements of electric, plumbing, carpentry, finished carpentry, cabinetry, finished wood working, welding, painting, concrete work, roofing, air conditioning and refrigeration.

  • Ability to read, understand and work from job specifications, architectural sketches, blueprints, building and equipment diagrams, building codes, equipment and manuals.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction

  • Ability to prepare and maintain records on activities.

  • Ability to apply all applicable safety measures.  

  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees.

  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of tools, machinery and equipment of the trades including small trucks and automotive equipment.

Education and Experience:

 

  • High school diploma or equivalency.

  • Two (2) years’ experience with responsibility for functions which demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

  • A combination of education, training, and experience maybe substituted at the City Manager’s discretion.

 

Certificates and Licenses:

 

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and must be insurable by the City’s current insurance provider.

  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required according to the job duties and responsibilities within one (1) year of employment.

  • Certified “LOCKSMITH” – within one (1) year of employment

  • Possess a Certificate for FEMA IS-00100 and IS-00700 with one (1) year of employment.

  • Possess an Intermediate Certificate for FDOT Maintenance of Traffic.
