MAINTENANCE MECHANIC I - UTILITIES

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Mechanical Electrical Foreman III, the Maintenance Mechanic I is responsible for assisting the crew leader with the maintenance and repair of lift stations, Wastewater Treatment Plant, and/or wells. Work is reviewed through oral and written reports, discussion, and results obtained.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Assists in preventive maintenance and scheduled maintenance of lift station equipment. Assist in the repair and/or replacement of motors, pumps and all associated equipment in lift stations and piping or structural components that require replacement.

  • Assists in the checking and maintenance of equipment such as motors, blowers, pumps, compressors, chemical feeders, rotary distributors and flotation units.

  • Assists in performing scheduled preventive maintenance and repairing a variety of water/wastewater related equipment.

  • Learns to fabricate or repair products (motors, machine parts, etc.) using a cutting torch and welder.

  • Assists in the pulling, troubleshooting and repairing of motors, starters, relays, regulators, pumps, soft starts, programmable logic controllers and many other items related to utilities.

  • Assists in the maintenance of the Lakeland/Plant City potable water interconnect.

  • Assists in the installation of well pumps, motors, and related equipment.

  • Assists in the preventative and corrective maintenance to Collection System lift stations, grounds and associated equipment.

  • Inspects pull chains on pumps and replace as needed. Inspects wear-rings and impellers on pumps. Exercises plug valves at the station. Cleans and inspects check valves at the stations. Checks operation of float switches in the station. Inspects wire ties on float and power cords and replace as needed.

  • Washes down pumping station, assists in vacuum cleaning of station, removes rags and debris from floats and electrical power cords.

  • Assists in installation or replacement of equipment and machinery; participates in major plant installation and equipment overhauls.

  • May operate heavy machinery including electrical meters, forklift, cranes, and front loader.

  • Assists with the maintenance of 4 water storage tanks, painting, cleaning, etc. Assists with repairing and cleaning of salt tanks. Assists with the maintenance and repair of 8 - 2000 gallon chlorine tanks and if they cannot be repaired, assists with the installation of new tanks.

  • Assists with concrete work and performs basic carpentry work in lift station repair, and other work as required.

  • Learns to use a handheld scanner for computer checks. Scans barcodes on motors, pumps, etc.

  • Maintains records and logs, as needed.

  • Follows the direction of Maintenance Mechanic III.

  • Works a rotating twenty-four hour, seven-day on-call shift for emergency coverage within 12 months.

  • All employees will be cross-trained in water, wastewater, and/or reclaimed water for equivalent positions. The employee may be directed to change positions at any time of employment without notice on a permanent or temporary basis.

  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent diploma.

  • 1 year experience and or training related to mechanical and electrical projects

 

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and must be insurable by the City’s current insurance provider.

  • Must obtain forklift certification within 2 years of permanent hire.

  • Must obtain Confined Space Entry Certification within 2 years of permanent hire.

  • Must obtain FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 within 2 years of permanent hire.
