Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Specialist II or Maintenance Specialist III, the Maintenance Specialist I is responsible for assisting the crew leader with the installation of water main lines, water service laterals, water meters and fire hydrants. This position is also responsible for assisting in the repair of water leaks, back-flow replacement, and hydrant repairs.

Assists Maintenance Specialist II/III in the maintenance and repairs to the water distribution system.

Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water mains, water service connections, fire hydrants and valves while using a shovel for excavation.

Assists in raising, lowering, or relocating water mains and meters to allow clearance for other utilities or improvements.

Assists with setting of meter boxes and water meters.

Assists with the measuring, cutting, and connecting of sections of pipe, using tapping machine, pipe cutter, thread, reamer, wrenches, assorted tools, glue, and couplers.

Making excavations in concrete, pavement and dirt to trouble-shoot and repair water mains, water lines, valves, and meters; using a backhoe, shovel, pick, jackhammer, and concrete saws.

Post-construction finishing work to grade out the surface, apply topsoil and sod grass, rakes shovels brooms and hand work as required.

Assists with obtaining and setting up equipment, tools and materials needed for work. Assists in setting up barricades and other warning devices to channel traffic around construction areas or other hazards.

Operates power-driven machinery such as air compressors, sled packers, jumping jack packers, and high-pressure pumps or other similarly sized equipment.

May drive trucks and learn to operate heavy and/or specialized equipment, such as small excavator, large excavators, backhoe, front end loaders, dump trucks, line locating equipment, leak locating equipment, valve locating equipment and a directional boring machine requiring extensive training to operate.

Works under all weather conditions to make repairs and restore services to customers.

Assists with preventive maintenance on valves.

All employees will be cross-trained in water, wastewater, and/or reclaimed water for equivalent positions. The employee may be directed to change positions at any time of employment without notice on a permanent or temporary basis.

Maintains a daily register of parts on trucks for water repairs. Maintains equipment and tools by greasing and cleaning them. Evaluates inventory on truck, restocks parts as needed. Services truck on weekly basis by checking fluid and oil levels.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent diploma.
Certificates and Licenses:
-
Possession of a Florida Driver’s License and be insurable by the City’s current insurance provider.

Must obtain CDL Class B with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements within 2 years of regular status employment.

Must obtain Level III Distribution System Operator’s license within 2 years regular status employment.
Requirements:

Must comply with on-call training and schedule within 1 year from original hire date.
