TRAFFIC MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST II-SIGNS

Position Summary: This is skilled work in the fabrication, installation, and repair of traffic control signs. Work involves erection of new signs and repair, or replacement of damaged signs as needed. It also involves the use of various types of equipment and methods in the fabrication of signs. All work is performed in accordance with standards set forth in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Traffic Operations Manager, and work is reviewed for results obtained.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

 

  • Operate computerized sign lettering and layout equipment.

  • Performs all field maintenance, repair, and new installation of 11 Traffic zones through-out the City.

  • Layout and hand letter special signs.

  • Erect regulatory, warning, and guide signs in accordance with specific standards.

  • Repair or replace damaged signs and bent posts.

  • Install and remove detours and work zone signing and flag traffic when required.

  • Trim shrubbery that causes sight obstructions at intersections or obstructs traffic control signs.

  • Inputs field data to collector tablet for Sign inventory.

  • Responds to emergency call-outs on critical sign replacements and emergency road closures.

  • Performs other related duties as required such as working with Signals, Roadway Markings and Street Lighting divisions and must be able to perform labor related duties associated.

  • May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.

  • Performs standby on a recurring basis, responds to emergency call-outs on traffic signal malfunctions, storm damage and critical sign replacement.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the standard equipment, materials, and procedures used in traffic signage.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.

  • Knowledge of MUTCD and FDOT Standards.

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to operate mechanical equipment and hand tools safely and efficiently.

  • Ability to keep accurate records.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, other agencies, and the general public.

  

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalent diploma.

  • One year of Signs or Markings experience preferred.

  • A combination of education, training, and experience may be substituted at the City’s discretion.

 

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Possession of a valid Driver License and be insurable by the City’s current insurance carrier.

  • Possession of Maintenance of Traffic Intermediate Certification within 6 months of employment.

  • Possession of IMSA Signs Level I within (1) year of eligibility.

  • Possession of IMSA Signals Level I within 1st year of employment.
