Police Department Application for Employment

 

Position Summary:

Performs entry level public safety related work requiring the operation of telephone and radio dispatching equipment used in the Police Communications Center.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: the following. Other duties may be assigned as dictated by operational necessity.

  • As a trainee, operates telephone answering equipment, computer aided dispatching system and radio dispatching equipment for dispatching public safety personnel to calls for service and relaying information between field personnel and other necessary agencies. Handles and processes complaints. Translates and encodes signals and codes.

  • As a trainee, maintains visual record of all assigned units as to locations, availability, and type of equipment. Takes and records messages.

  • As a trainee, operates teletypewriter equipment; accesses, inputs and retrieves information from a computer; teletypes on local, state, and national networks.

  • Operates computer (CAD) equipment in securing data upon request.

  • As a trainee, coordinates the movements of numerous public safety units.

  • Performs data entry clerical duties and records information, checks print out information and makes appropriate corrections.

  • Performs typing of letters, records and reports. Assists in processing warrants.

  • Ability to gain knowledge of radio transmitting techniques and procedures as applied to dispatching.

  • Ability to gain knowledge of departmental regulations pertaining to the dispatch of public safety personnel.

  • Ability to gain knowledge of departmental regulations pertaining to complaint and dispatch activities.

  • Ability to comprehend and carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to listen effectively.

  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with public safety personnel by means of two-way radio system.

  • Ability to keep records.

  • Ability to read maps.

  • Ability to concentrate under stress

  • Ability to accomplish more than one task at a time.

  • Ability to speak clearly and with good diction.

  • Ability to learn the operation of teletype equipment.

  • Skill in typing 30 wpm minimum.

  • High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalent diploma.
