Payroll & Accounting Specialist - Hybrid - Temp, Temp-to-Hire - San Rafael - $33–$37/hour

In this role, you'll support the organization’s fiscal operations by managing and owning their 50 employee payroll process, You’ll play a key role in keeping payroll data accurate, organized, and compliant—while contributing to a mission that makes a real impact in public education.

Location: Hybrid – 3 days onsite in San Rafael (near SMART station), 2 days remote

In this role, you will:

Process payroll, including voluntary deductions, status changes, terminations, and retirement documents.

Audit and calculate payroll adjustments; prepare reports for retirement, OASDI, SDI, and federal, state, and local taxes.

Track PTO, leaves, and hours worked using Excel for accurate reporting.

Maintain complete payroll and benefits records.

Perform full-cycle accounts payable, including invoice processing, payments, and reconciliations.

Reconcile financial accounts such as cash, bank statements, and payroll accounts.

Prepare and process accounting documents, including purchase orders, travel claims, and requisitions.

Compile and verify financial and statistical data for reports.

Assist with budget tracking and ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
We’re looking for someone who has:

3+ years of recent payroll processing and accounting experience.

Strong Excel skills for tracking, reporting, and data analysis.

Solid understanding of wage and hour compliance.

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in accounting, business, or public administration preferred.

Experience with accounting/financial systems (QSS, Escape, or Frontline a plus—but not required).
