Our client is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Payroll Accountant to manage and process all aspects of municipal payroll operations. This role is responsible for ensuring timely, accurate payroll processing and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The ideal candidate will bring a strong accounting background, attention to detail, and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process bi-weekly payroll for municipal employees in accordance with state, federal, and local regulations.

  • Maintain payroll records, reports, and documentation in compliance with internal policies and external audits.

  • Ensure accurate calculation of wages, overtime, benefits, and deductions including taxes, garnishments, and retirement contributions.

  • Collaborate with HR for new hires, terminations, and employee changes affecting payroll.

  • Reconcile payroll accounts and prepare journal entries for general ledger.

  • Respond to employee payroll inquiries and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.

  • Assist with year-end processes including W-2 preparation and filing.

  • Prepare reports for internal use and regulatory agencies as required.

  • Stay up to date with changes in payroll laws and regulations.

  • Support audits and financial reporting processes.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a payroll or accounting role, preferably with public sector or governmental accounting experience.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.

  • Knowledge of general ledger, journal entries, and payroll reconciliations.

  • Strong understanding of applicable federal and state payroll laws and tax regulations.

  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and confidentiality.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Black Mountain Software or similar municipal financial/payroll systems.

  • Previous experience working for a municipality or other government agency.

  • Familiarity with GASB standards and fund accounting principles.

  • Knowledge of public employee retirement systems and benefit administration.

Pay $60,000 - $65,000
