Rate of Pay:

$18.05

 

 

 

Assists skilled workers in performing their assigned duties. May be assigned to one specific task or may be transferred from task to task as a project progresses to completion. Tasks are generally unskilled manual duties. 

 

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Sets up barricades and traffic cones. Acts as flagman to direct traffic as times. Breaks ground or pavement where necessary by use of jackhammer or whatever methods conditions prescribe.

  • Digs trenches by means of shovel, or other methods as conditions prescribe. Tamps and backfills trenches.

  • Does other similar work, which may be called upon to perform, and any other work as necessary or to satisfactorily complete the job to which has been assigned.

  • Ability to work call duty to include holidays, nights, and weekends as well as ability to work unscheduled overtime when needed.

  • Ability to work an adjusted schedule as needed to meet deadlines.

  • Working knowledge of use, care, and safe handling of tools, equipment, and materials commonly used in the trade.

  • Ability to observe and report equipment status

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

  • Capable of working independently and prioritizing tasks in order to meet the needs of the unit and its customers.

  • Operates equipment required for the installation of electrical and gas lines including air compressors.

  • Assists in the construction of duct banks, manholes, natural gas mains and distribution lines.

  • Ability to assist Journeymen as needed to complete the job.

  • Uses equipment in a manner which subjects it to normal wear and tear only.

  • Assists in the installation of customer electrical and natural gas services.

  • Performs job duties in a safety conscious manner that reflects safety in work habits and working on projects.

  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to dig spreads and level dirt, gravel and sand.

  • Ability to load and unload materials from company truck by hand or with an assisting device such as a forklift.

  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks involving dexterous use of hands and tools. i.e. demolishing structures, dismantling forms, cutting insulation material, removing concrete.

  • Ability to transport needed tools, equipment and materials to/from and around work site.

  • Clean tools, equipment, materials and specified work areas as needed.

  • Follow specific work orders as given by skilled worker or foreman.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces such as man holes and vaults

  • Oral/Written Communications 

 

Preferred Qualification 

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

 

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED

 

 

Working Environment

Often work outdoors, but some workers may work indoors. Are often exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Are sometimes exposed to very hot or very cold temperatures when working outdoors. Are sometimes exposed to contaminants, such as fumes from paints or sealers. Operating hand tools, machinery, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. 

 

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, handling, reach outward, reach above shoulder, crawl, squat/Kneel, bend, push and pull frequently. Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on work surface.

  • Ability to use upper and lower extremities to move or transport 25 to 50 pounds, including pressing against something to force it in a forward, downward or outward position or drag, haul 25 to 50 pounds

  • Ability to bend the body downward and forward by bending spine at waist, and bending legs at knees and moving extremities in any direction

  • Ability to withstand physical demands on the body, including being in a stationary and/or standing position most of the day

  • Ability to express and exchange ideas by means of the spoken word, including where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly or quickly

  • Ability to understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information
