Job Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for layouts and manufacture of traffic control signs in accordance with standards of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices as published by the Federal Highway Administration under 23 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 655, Subpart F. Working conditions are in a shop environment with frequent exposure to hazardous materials and unfavorable fumes and odors. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.
Essential Job Functions
- Prepares traffic sign layout using appropriate font type and size to meet standards of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).
- Manufactures all types of traffic control signs to include regulatory, warning, guide, historical, construction, and street markers, occasionally lifting and carrying materials weighing 10-15 pounds.
- Utilizes specialized computer software (Flexi-Sign and Omega software) to design and manufacture signs.
- Utilizes various sign shop equipment including flat bed plotters, electronic, hand-rolled pneumatic applicators, and an electronic sign
- maker.
- Coordinates and reviews work assignments with Engineering Division.
- Designs and manufactures specialized signs for various City departments utilizing graphic designs and specific fonts to meet the needs of the customer; assembles the layout by developing a conceptual design using graphics and fonts to develop the message that the customer needs to convey.
- Designs and manufactures City Council Office window decals, name plates, placards, and directional signage for all field offices.
- Performs vacuum applicator operations, to include sheeting on sign blanks.
- Keeps a clean and safe work environment.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
- Three (3) years of sign shop experience, to include computer experience with sign manufacturing software.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of sign layout techniques.
- Knowledge of state traffic laws.
- Knowledge of FAA regulations.
- Knowledge of basic sign maintenance and repair
- Knowledge of computer graphics.
- Skill in utilizing all materials and equipment related to tasks.
- Ability to layout signs according to specific dimensions.
- Ability to understand and apply basic math to sign layouts.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to use safety precautions in the performance of tasks.
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodation.
Working Environment
- Work may be performed in warehouses, production facilities, event venues, or outdoor settings.
- Exposure to varying temperatures, weather conditions, noise, and dust may occur depending on the job site.
- Fast-paced, team-oriented environment with strict safety protocols.
- Wear appropriate safety PPE as determined by job site such as hard hat, vest, gloves, safety glasses and/or safety shoes.
- Must be flexible with shift and weekends in order to meet or complete project deadlines.

- Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull 50–75 lbs repeatedly.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and reaching.
- Ability to climb stairs or ladders, crouch, or kneel as needed.
