The Prep Cook is responsible for preparing ingredients for chefs to cook, and helping keep the kitchen running efficiently. Additional responsibilities will be to assist chefs with cooking, and serving food, and ensure the kitchen is clean and sanitized


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • They are preparing and serving over 100 trays during meal times.
  • Preparing ingredients: Washing, peeling, cutting, and portioning ingredients like fruits, vegetables, and meats 
  • Measuring and assembling ingredients: Measuring ingredients and seasonings, and assembling ingredients according to recipes 
  • Preparing sauces, dressings, and marinades: Making sauces, dressings, and marinades 
  • Storing food: Storing food properly to keep it fresh and high-quality 
  • Cleaning and maintaining kitchen equipment: Washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, and taking out the trash 
  • Following food safety and sanitation guidelines: Complying with nutrition and sanitation guidelines 
  • Assisting chefs: Helping chefs with various tasks as needed 
  • Labeling and stocking ingredients: Labeling and stocking all ingredients on shelves so they are easy to find 
  • Maintaining a clean kitchen: Keeping the kitchen clean and orderly



Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be flexible with shift. The schedule will vary weekly depending on kitchen needs
  • Must be able to pass a national background check 
  • Must be able to pass drug screening
  • Must have Food Handling Certification
  • 6 months experience as a Prep Cook or related field
  • Must be experienced with a Kettle Burner
  • Capability to lift and carry items up to a certain weight (usually 25-50 pounds).
  • Ability to perform physical tasks for extended periods, including standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require repetitive motion, such as sweeping, mopping, or wiping surfaces.

Working Environment

There may be prolonged periods spent working at the hot stove and grill. Heat may be uncomfortable. Required to wear a uniform, hair net, protective eyewear, non-skid shoes, appropriate oven gloves, and protective gloves.  Work requires sufficient strength and endurance to meet demands for high volume food preparation. The area is noisy and requires good receptive communication skills.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, handle, reach outward, reach above shoulder, crawl, squat/Kneel, bend, push, and pull frequently. Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on a work surface.
  • Ability to use upper and lower extremities to move or transport 25 to 50 pounds, including pressing against something to force it in a forward, downward, or outward position or drag, haul 25 to 50 pounds
  • Ability to bend the body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist, bending legs at the knees, and moving extremities in any direction
  • Ability to withstand physical demands on the body, including being in a stationary and/or standing position most of the day
  • Ability to express and exchange ideas using the spoken word, including where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly
  • Ability to understand, remember, and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information
