Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing manual labor with a wide variety of construction and maintenance work. Depending on area of assignment, may be responsible for providing laundry and repair/mending service to maintain table skirts and covers. Exercises no supervision.


Essential Job Functions

  • Utilizes maintenance equipment to perform maintenance duties which may include sweeping or cleaning streets, maintaining shrubs and flowers, clearing weeds and brush, mowing and trimming public areas, tree
     maintenance to include trimming/pruning, and performing custodial duties in public areas.

  • Pressure washing, painting, and stripping experience.

  • Completes repairs as necessary. 

  • Experience and knowledge of power tools.

  • Cleans, repairs, and replaces equipment at City parks and facilities.

  • Prepares City facilities for various City events.

  • Participates in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, City buildings, and facilities.

  • Inspects equipment and reports any equipment in need of maintenance or repair.

  • Operates tractor mower, dump truck, and other small equipment.

  • Loads trucks with sand, gravel, or waste material using a hand shovel, lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.


Job Requirements

  • Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

  • One (1) year of experience in labor or maintenance.

  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.



SAPD Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.

  • Knowledge of manual labor tasks.

  • Knowledge of hazards and safety measures as they apply to the type of work being performed.

  • Knowledge of methods, equipment, and materials as they relate to the type of work being performed.

  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.

  • Ability to learn basic laundering techniques, depending on area of assignment.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job, with or without accommodations. 

  • Working conditions are inside and outside with routine repeated exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, and dirty environment.


Working Environment

Often work outdoors, but some workers may work indoors. Are often exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Are sometimes exposed to very hot or very cold temperatures when working outdoors. Are sometimes exposed to contaminants, such as fumes from paints or sealers. Operating hand tools, machinery, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. 


Physical Demands

  • Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, handling, reach outward, reach above shoulder, crawl, squat/Kneel, bend, push and pull frequently. Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on work surface.

  • Ability to use upper and lower extremities to move or transport 25 to 50 pounds, including pressing against something to force it in a forward, downward or outward position or drag, haul 25 to 50 pounds

  • Ability to bend the body downward and forward by bending spine at waist, and bending legs at knees and moving extremities in any direction

  • Ability to withstand physical demands on the body, including being in a stationary and/or standing position most of the day

  • Ability to express and exchange ideas by means of the spoken word, including where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly or quickly

  • Ability to understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information
