General Requirements
• BS Chemistry or Chemical Technologist Degree with laboratory and process operations experience is preferred.
• Work in a lab with 5 years’ experience will be considered.
• Laboratory experience:
o Chemical plant and/or mineral processing chemical laboratory experience preferred;
o Operating and performing routine maintenance of analytical instruments, including: analytical balance; density, pH, conductivity, and turbidity meters; atomic absorption spectroscope, ICP-OES, vacuum pump, drying oven, and digital microscope preferred;
o Chemical plant and or mineral processing field and process plant sampling, sample preparation, and analytical testing (chemical titrations and moderately complex, multi-step laboratory analyses) desirable;
o Purchasing of laboratory chemicals and supplies -- experience using SAP or similar purchasing requisition, or maintenance requisition system experience an asset
• Must be familiar with chemical laboratory health and safety, quality control/quality assurance, and chemistry data analysis
• Must have solid written and verbal communications and personal computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint (or similar software) capability and computer database software experience.
• Role will require working shift work in a 24-hr, 7-days week pilot plant experimental operation, with occasional work on other shifts as required.
• Good interpersonal skills required to communicate with and support a pilot plant staff, maintenance, and engineering staff and liaise with various company consultants and experts.
• Must be physically mobile - pilot plant is on three floors with only stair access
GENERAL DUTIES
• Support the operation of a continuous pilot plant for testing the recovery of lithium from bromine plant tail brine and a smaller pilot plant for conversion of lithium recovered to high purity lithium carbonate (used as a raw material in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles).
• Collection and analysis of operating data (flow, temperature, pH, etc.) from pilot plant control system data archiving system.
• Sampling of process fluids using standard operating procedures.
• Preparation of samples for analysis
• Laboratory analysis of samples for chemistry and materials properties using standard operating procedures.
• Managing and analysis of chemical and process data using a database program and various data storage systems for data security. (There will be a significant quantity of data over the one-year operation of the pilot plant.)
• Preparing reports on pilot plant operations and process streams based on data analysis.
• Packaging and shipping of selected process fluid and solids samples to analytical labs for analysis.
• Quality control of internal and external chemical test data.
• Conduct or support routine health, safety, security and environmental inspections of the pilot plant.
• Provide assistance to Standard Lithium specialists in gathering and analyzing data.
• Provide assistance to Pilot Plant Manager with purchasing and administrative duties.
• Liaise with Lanxess and outside laboratories staff.
• May act in a plant operator role on a temporary basis to cover unexpected operator absence.
