In the past, we’ve trained accounting minded people for this position so while a knowledge of construction/building is very good base, it’s not a must have" Department: Construction/Estimating Reports To: Director of Estimating and Purchasing Position Summary: The Construction Cost Estimator is responsible for developing detailed, accurate, and timely cost estimates for residential construction projects. This role includes reviewing plans and specifications, soliciting bids from trade partners and vendors, and maintaining cost databases. The Estimator will also prepare material take-offs and enter approved budgets into construction management software to generate purchase orders. Accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to deadlines are essential. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Analyze architectural drawings, scopes of work, and specifications to develop project estimates. • Perform quantity take-offs and compile comprehensive lists of labor, material, and time requirements. • Solicit, receive, and evaluate bids from trade partners and vendors for accuracy and competitiveness. • Convert buyer-selected options into formal change orders in the estimating system. • Prepare and maintain current cost databases and material price files. • Generate purchase orders using approved estimates within the construction management system. • Provide cost projections and analysis to support project budgeting and planning. • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Residential Construction Knowledge: Proficiency in residential building systems, materials, and construction methods. • Estimating Proficiency: Ability to interpret blueprints, perform quantity take-offs, and develop cost estimates. • Technical Skills: Experience with estimating and construction management software; proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other office applications. • Attention to Detail: Strong organizational skills and a focus on accuracy. • Analytical Thinking: Ability to analyze data and resolve estimating discrepancies. • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate across departments and with external partners. • Time Management: Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. • Professionalism: Demonstrates a high level of integrity and represents the company in a professional manner at all times. Qualifications: • High school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field preferred. • Minimum 2 years of experience in residential construction estimating preferred. • Familiarity with homebuilding software platforms (e.g., BuilderTrend, BuildPro, Hyphen, MarkSystems etc.) is a plus. Work Environment: This position operates primarily in a professional office environment. Occasional visits to job sites or vendor locations may be required.
