Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled Manual Machinist to join our clients operations team in Houston, TX. This role is responsible for operating manual machines such as lathes, mills, and grinders to produce or repair precision turbine components to exact specifications. The ideal candidate will have experience in a job shop or turbine service environment and be comfortable working with tight tolerances and custom one-off parts.
Key Responsibilities
Set up and operate manual machines (engine lathe, vertical/horizontal mills, surface grinders, etc.) to machine turbine components including rotors, diaphragms, valves, and casings.
Read and interpret complex blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions to determine machining operations and tolerances.
Select and install appropriate tooling, speeds, and feeds based on material and specifications.
Measure and inspect machined parts using precision tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, bore gauges, and calipers to ensure conformance to specifications.
Perform threading, boring, facing, and other custom machining tasks as required.
Collaborate with engineering and shop teams to ensure machining processes are accurate and efficient.
Follow all safety protocols, wear appropriate PPE, and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
Perform routine maintenance and inspections on machines to ensure proper function.
Assist with fabrication and repair tasks as needed in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Qualifications
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Manual Machinist in a precision job shop, power generation, or turbine repair setting.
Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
Solid knowledge of speeds, feeds, and tooling for various metals (carbon steel, stainless, alloys).
Experience with close-tolerance machining (+/- .001").
Proficient in the use of measuring tools and equipment.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
Willingness to work overtime and weekends as needed to support customer deadlines.
Preferred:
Experience in machining steam or gas turbine components.
Familiarity with rebuild/repair procedures for rotating equipment.
Forklift and overhead crane experience.
